SEQUENCE OF TENSES:

Sequence of Tense জানাটা খুবই জরুরী। সিকোয়েন্স অব টেন্স জানা থাকলে একটি বাক্যে বা Sentence এ কোন Tense এর পরে কোন টেন্স ব্যবহার করতে হয়, তা ব্যবহার করা সহজ হয়। নিচে ১০৩ থেকে ১১২ পর্যন্ত সবগুলোতেই Sequence of Tense ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

 

103. Principal clause যদি Present / Future Tense এ থাকে তবে  Subordanite Clause সাধারনত যে কোন  tense হয়।

§  সে বলে যে সে সেখানে যায় - He says that he goes there. (এখানে He says হলো Principle clause, এবং that he goes there হলো Subordinate clause).

§  সে বলে যে সে সেখানে গিয়েছিল-  He says that he went there.
§  সে বলে যে সে সেখানে যাবে- He says that he will go there.

 

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করে - He says that he practices English.

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করছে - He says that he is practicing English.

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করেছে- He says that he has practiced English.

§ সে বলে যে সে দুই মাস ধরে ইংরেজি চর্চা করছে- He says that he has been practicing English for two months.

 

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করেছিল- He says that he practiced English.

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করছিল- He says that he was practicing English.

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করিয়াছিল- He says that he had practiced English.

§  সে বলে যে সে দুই মাস ধরে ইংরেজি চর্চা করতেছিল - He says that he hadbeen practicing English for two months.

 

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করবে - He says that he will practice English.

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করতে থাকবে- He says that he will be practicing English.

§  সে বলে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করে থাকবে- He says that he will have practiced English.

§  সে বলে যে সে দুই মাস ধরে ইংরেজি চর্চা করতে থাকবে- He says that he will have been practicing English for two months.

 

§  কিছুদিন পর, সে বলবে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করে - After some days, he will say that he practices English.

§  কিছুদিন পর, সে বলবে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করছে - After some days, he will say that he is practicing English.

§  কিছুদিন পর, সে বলবে যে সে ইংরেজি চর্চা করেছে - After some days, he will say that he has practiced English.

§  কিছুদিন পর, সে বলবে যে সে দুই মাস ধরে ইংরেজি চর্চা করছে - After some days, he will say that he has been practicing English for two months.

 

§  আমি মনে করি যে লোকটা পাগল - I think that the man is mad.

§  আমি জানি যে তুমি এই কাজটা করেছিলে-  I know that you did the work.

§  সে মনে করবে যে আমরা তাকে সাহায্য করিনি-  He will think that we didn’t help him.

§  আমি জানি তুমি সেই সময় যা চিন্তা করছিলে - I know what you were thinking at that moment.

§  আমি জানি তুমি এই মূহুর্তে যা চিন্তা করছো - I know what you are thinking at this moment.

§  তুমি কি জানো কেন সে এখানে এসেছিল-  Do you know why he came here?

§  তুমি আমাদের সাথে যাও কি না যাও তাতে আমাদের এসে যায় না- It doesn’t matter whether you go with us or not.

§  আমি জানি কেন তুমি সেখানে যাও - I know why you go there.

 

§  কেন তুমি সেখানে গিয়েছিলে - Why you went there?

§  কেন তুমি সেখানে যাচ্ছিলে - Why you were going there?

§  কেন তুমি সেখানে যেতে থাকবে?- Why you will be going there?

 

104. Principal clause যদি PastTense এ থাকে তবে  Subordanite Clause সাধারনত Past tense এ হয়।

 

§  তিনি বলেছিলেন যে তিনি আসবেন- He said that he would come.

§  তিনি বলেছিলেন যে তিনি এসেছিলেন- He said that he had come.

§ আমি জানতাম যে তুমি পরাজিত হবে- I knew that you would be defeated. (Passive)

§ আমরা লক্ষ্য করেছিলাম যে তারা চেষ্টা করছিল/করতেছিল -We noticed that they were trying.

§  আমি সেখানে গিয়েছিলাম কারণ সে আমাকে যেতে বলেছিল- I went there as he had told me to go.

 

§ বাবা আমাকে বললেন, “তুমি কি এখন পড়ছো?” -Father said to me, “Are you reading now?”

§ বাবা আমাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিল আমি তখন পড়ছিলাম কি না- Father asked me if / whether I was reading then.

§ সে আমাকে বলেছিল, “আমি তোমার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছি -He said to me, “I am waiting for you.”

§ সে আমাকে বলেছিল যে সে আমার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিল/ করতেছিল -He told me that he was waiting for me.

 

ð Universal Truth, Habitual Action, Mathematical Calculations & Moral Guidelines সর্বদা Present Indefinite Tense হবে।

§  শিক্ষক বলেছিলেন যে পৃথিবী সূর্যের চারদিকে ঘোরে – The teacher said that the earth moves round the sun.

§  তিনি বলেছিলেন যে দুইয়ে দুইয়ে চার হয় – He said that two and two is four./Or, He said that two and two makes four.

§  তিনি বলেছিলেন যে তিনি প্রতিদিন ইংরেজি চর্চা করে- He said that he practices English every day.

§  বাবা বলেছিলেন যে দুধ সাদা – Father said that milk is white.

§  বাবা আমাকে বলেছিল যে সততা সর্বোত্তম পন্থা- Father told me that honesty is the best policy.

 

105. Principal clause যদি Future Tense এ থাকে এবং Subordanite Clause যদি Before, After, Until বা When দিয়ে শুরু হয় তবে বাংলায় Future মনে হলেও ইংরেজিতে Present Indefinite Tense করতে হয়।

§  বাবা আসার পূর্বে মা ভাত রান্না করে থাকবে- Mother will have cooked rice before father comes.

§  ক্লাসটি শুরু হওয়ার পূর্বে আমরা বাড়ির কাজ শেষ করে থাকবো- We will have finished our homework before the class starts.

§  সে না আসা পর্যন্ত আমি এখানে অপেক্ষা করবো- I will wait here until he comes.

§  যখন তিনি এখানে আসবেন তখন তিনি আমাদেরকে একটি গল্প বলবেন - When he comes here, he will tell us a story./ Or, He will tell us a story when he comes here.

 

106. Subordanite Clause টি যদি That / so that দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং বাংলায় যদি ‘যাতে’ অর্থ দেয় তবে Present এ May/Can এবং Past এ Might/Could হয়ে যায়।

§  তারা ইংরেজি চর্চা করছে যাতে তারা ইংরেজি শিখতে পারে- They are practicing English so that / in order that they can/may learn English.

§  তারা ইংরেজি চর্চা করছিল যাতে তারা ইংরেজি শিখতে পারতো- They were practicing English so that/in order that they could/might learn English.

§  সে কঠোর পরিশ্রম করেছিল যাতে সে জীবনে সফল হতে পারতো - He worked hard so that/in order that he could/might succeed in life.

§  তিনি লন্ডনে যাবেন যাতে তিনি একটা ভালো চাকরি পেতে পারেন- He will go to London so that/in order that he can/may get a good job.

 

 

107. Subordanite Clause টি তুলনা বুঝাতে Than দিয়ে শুরু হলে, যেকোন Clause এ যেকোন Tense হতে পারে।

§  সে যতটুকু জানে তার চেয়ে বেশি কথা বলে- He talks more than he knows.

§  সে যতটুকু জানে তার চেয়ে বেশি কথা বলতো- He talked more than he knows.

§  সে যতটুকু জানে তার চেয়ে বেশি কথা বলবে- He will talk more than he knows.

 

§  সে যতটুকু জানবে তার চেয়ে বেশি কথা বলতে পারে- He can talk more than he will know.

 

§  সে যতটুকু জেনেছে তার চেয়ে বেশি কথা বলছে- He is talking more than he has known.

§  সে যতটুকু জেনেছিল তার চেয়ে বেশি কথা বলেছে- He has talked more than he knew.

 

108. As though / As if অবাস্তব পরিস্থিতি প্রকাশ করে যদি অবাস্তব Tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।

§  তাকে এমন দেখাচ্ছে যেন সে পাগল - He looks as if he were mad. (পাগল না, বা জানা নাই পাগল কিনা)            

                                                            - He looks as if he is mad. (আসলেই পাগল)।

 

§  তুমি এমনভাবে কথা বলছো যেন তুমি উত্তরটা জানো - You are talking as if you knew the answer. (জানে না, বা জানা নাই জানে কিনা)                                - You are talking as if you know the answer. (উত্তরটা আসলেই জানে)।

 

109. Lest এর ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে Principal Clause যে Tense এ থাকুক না কেন, Subordinate clause এ Should/Present Subjunctive Mood ব্যবহৃত হবে। (যাতে না/পাছে এই ভয়ে যে / এটা বা ওটা যাতে না ঘটে যায়)।

 

§  সে দেখেশুনে হাঁটছে যাতে সে পড়ে না যায়- He is walking lest he falldown. (Not-falls down)

                                                                Or, -He is walking lest he should fall down.

 

110. Subordanite Clause যদি Adjective Clause হয় তবে Subordanite Clause যেকোন Tense হতে পারে।

§  আমি লোকটাকে চিনি যে গতকাল এখানে এসেছিল- I know the man who came here yesterday.

§  আমি লোকটাকে চিনি যে আগামীকাল এখানে আসবে- I know the man who will come here tomorrow.

§  আমি লোকটাকে চিনি যে প্রতিদিন এখানে আসে- I know the man who comes here every day.

111. If only, It is high time / It is time থাকলে Past Subjunctive হবে।

§  যদি সে সত্যটা জানতো! - If only he knew the truth! (সে সত্যটা জানে না, কিন্তু তার ইচ্ছা হয় যদি সে অতীতে জানতো)।

 

ð ভবিষ্যৎ ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করতেঃ If only + Subject + would + Verb

§  যদি সে এই মোবাইল ফোনটা কিনতো! - If only he would buy this mobile phone!

 

ð অতীতে কোনকিছু ঘটেছে সেটা change করার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করতেঃ If only + Past Perfect

§  তুমি যদি তোমার বাবার কথা শুনতে! – If only you had listened to your father! (তুমি তোমার বাবার কথা শুনো নাই, কিন্তু সেই ইচ্ছাটাই করা হচ্ছে যদি শুনতে)।

 

112. Subordanite Clause কোনো কারণ বোঝালে, যেকোনো Tense হতে পারে। (Based on sense)

§ আমি তোমাকে বিশ্বাস করি না কারণ তুমি মিথ্যা কথা বলো -I don’t believe you because you tell a lie.

§ আমি তোমাকে বিশ্বাস করি না কারণ তুমি মিথ্যা কথা বলেছিলে -I don’t believe you because you told a lie.

§ আমি তোমাকে বিশ্বাস করি না কারণ তুমি মিথ্যা কথা বলবে -I don’t believe you because you will tell a lie.
