Little, A little ও The
little এর
সবার অর্থ সাধারণভাবে ‘অল্প পরিমান’ বা ‘কম পরিমান’।
এদের অর্থ ‘অল্প পরিমান’ বা ‘কম পরিমান’ হলেও তাদের একে অপরের মধ্যে পার্থক্য কম নয়।
(a). Little শব্দের অর্থ ‘খুবই কম পরিমান’ (বস্তু বা অন্য কোন কিছু, যা গণনা করা যায় না। অর্থাৎ, Uncountable)।
পক্ষান্তরে, ‘A little’ এর অর্থ ‘কিছু পরিমান’
(বস্তু বা অন্য কোন কিছু, যা
গণনা করা যায় না। অর্থাৎ, Uncountable)।
We
have got little time.
- আমরা খুব কম সময় পেয়েছি (সময় পাই নাই বললেই চলে)।
I
have little money.
- আমার অল্প টাকা আছে (অর্থাৎ
আমার কাছে খুব কম টাকা আছে, এমন
পরিমান টাকা আছে, যাকে
বলা যায়, প্রায়
কিছুই নেই)।
He
took little milk in his
tea.
- সে
তার চায়ে একটু দুধ নিল। (খুব অল্প পরিমান)।
This
rich man had little concern
for the poor.
- এই
ধনী লোকটির দরিদ্রদের জন্য অল্প চিন্তা ছিল। (খুব অল্প পরিমান)।
We have little time left to finish the
task.
- কাজটি শেষ করার জন্য আমাদের হাতে খুব কম সময় বাকি আছে।
I have little information as regards his past life - তার অতীত জীবন সম্পর্কে আমার কাছে খুব কম তথ্য আছে।
There
is a little water
in the bottle
- বোতলে একটু জল আছে। (খুব অল্প, তবে
কিছু পরিমান)।
I
speak a
little English
- আমি সামান্য ইংরেজি বলতে পারি। (অর্থাৎ, কিছু হলেও ইংরেজি বলতে পারি)।
Give
me a little time to finish this job
- এই
কাজটি শেষ করার জন্য আমাকে একটু সময় দিন।
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
- অল্প জ্ঞান বিপদজনক। (অর্থাৎ, কিছু পরিমান জ্ঞান)
There is a
little chance that the boy will
win.
- ছেলেটির জয়ের সম্ভাবনা একটু বেশি।
(b). Little হচ্ছে মূলত: Semi-negative বা
আধা না-বাচক
শব্দ। Little
দ্বারা ‘কম পরিমান’ বুঝিয়ে মূলত: little কে না-বোধক
অর্থে ব্যবহৃত করা হয়।
পক্ষান্তরে, ‘a little’ হচ্ছে Positive শব্দ, তাই
‘a little’ কে হ্যাঁ-বোধক অর্থে ব্যবহৃত করা হয়। ‘little’ দ্বারা যা বুঝানো হয়, ‘a
little’ দ্বারা তার চেয়ে বেশী বুঝানো হয়।
Example:
We
have little time to go
there.
- আমাদের সেখানে যাওয়ার খুব কম সময় আছে। (অর্থাৎ সময় নাই বললেই চলে।।
It
will take little time to
go there.
- সেখানে যেতে কয়েক মিনিট সময় লাগবে (অর্থাৎ
খুবই কম সময় লাগবে)।
He
saves a
little money every month.
- তিনি প্রতি মাসে কিছু অর্থ সাশ্রয় করেন।
Hurry
up! We have got a little time to go there.
- তাড়াতাড়ি কর! আমরা সেখানে যেতে একটু সময় পেয়েছি।
(c). Little এর পূর্বে very ব্যবহার
করা যায়, a little এর পূর্বে only ব্যবহৃত হয়। এক্ষেত্রে, a little এর পূর্বে only ব্যবহৃত হলে না-বোধক
ধারনা প্রকাশ করে।
I
speak very little English
- আমি খুব অল্প ইংরেজি বলতে পারি। (অর্থাৎ, আমি প্রায় ইংরেজি বলতে পারি না)।
There's only a little milk left.
- সামান্য দুধ বাকি আছে।
Only a little food is enough for the baby
cat.
- বাচ্চা বিড়ালটার জন্য সামান্য খাবারই যথেষ্ট।
Only a little water is in the Jug.
- জগটিতে সামান্য জল আছে।
(d). A
little এর পরিবর্তে some + uncountable noun ব্যবহার করা যায়, কিন্তু little এর পরিবর্তে some + uncountable noun ব্যবহার করা যায় না।
Example:
- Give
me a little time
to finish this job. – Give me some time
to finish this job.
- I need a
little sugar in this cream. – I need some sugar in this cream some
sugar.
(e). The
little দ্বারা ‘কম’ কিন্তু ’নির্দিষ্ট পরিমান’ বুঝায়। এখানে little এর পূর্বে ‘the’ ব্যবহৃত হয়ে তা Definite
article এর ন্যায় কাজ করছে এবং তা ’নির্দিষ্ট কিছু পরিমান’ বুঝাচ্ছে।
তাই, little এর পূর্বে তখনই ‘the’ ব্যবহার করতে হবে যখন ’নির্দিষ্ট পরিমান’ বুঝাতে চাওয়া হয়।

– তুমি যখন আমার জন্য ছোট কাজ গুলি করো তখন তা আমাকে আনন্দিত করে।
Little, a
little ও the little এর ব্যবহার বিষয়ে সংক্ষেপে বলা যায় যে:
যেমন: I have little
money. – I have no money at all. আমার কাছে টাকা নাই বললেই চলে।
যেমন: I have a little money. - I have some money. আমার কাছে অল্প কিছু টাকা আছে।
যেমন: The little money I gave him was a great help
for him. – The specific amount of money I gave him was a great for him. নির্দিষ্ট পরিমান অর্থ, যা আমি তাকে দিয়েছিলাম।

(a). Little used as an adjective:
Little is
usually an Adjective. You can use it to talk about the size of something. It
is used with uncountable nouns.
- He
took a little red book from his pocket.
(b). a little' used as an adverb:
A
little is usually an adverb. You can use it after a verb,
or in front of an adjective or another adverb. It means `to a
small extent or degree'.
- They
get paid for it. Not much. Just a little.
- The
local football team is doing a little better.
- The
celebrations began a little earlier than expected.
Be Careful! Don't use ‘a little' in front of an
adjective when the adjective comes in front of a noun.
For
example:
Don't say: `It was a little better result'.
Say: `It was a slightly better result' or `It was a somewhat better result'.
(C). Used in front of nouns:
Little
and
a little are also used in front of nouns to talk about quantities. When
they are used like this, they do not have the same meaning.
You
use a little to show that you are talking about a small quantity or
amount of something. When you use little without `a', you are
emphasizing that there is only a small quantity or amount of something.
So,
for example, if you say `I have a little money', you are saying that you have
some money.
However,
if you say `I have little money', you mean that you do not have enough money.
- I
had made a little progress - আমি একটু উন্নতি করেছি।
- It
is clear that little progress was made - এটা স্পষ্ট যে সামান্য অগ্রগতি হয়েছে।
(d). Used as pronouns:
Little and
a little can be used in similar ways as pronouns.
- Beat in the eggs, a little at a time - ডিমগুলো একটু একটু করে বিট করুন।
- Little
has
changed - সামান্য পরিবর্তন হয়েছে।
(e). ‘not much’
In
conversation and in less formal writing, people do not usually use `little'
without `a'. Instead, they use ‘not much’.
For
example:
Instead
of saying - `I have little money',
They
say - `I haven't got much money' or `I don't have much money'.
- We
don't have much time.
Be Careful! Don't
use ‘little’ or ‘a little’ when you are talking about a small
number of people or things.
For
example:
Don't say: `She has a little hens'.
Say: `She has a few hens'.
Similarly,
Don't say: `Little people attended his lectures'.
Say: `Few people attended his lectures', or `Not
many people attended his lectures'.
